CAMPING

Our vast campsite is placed in an idyllic location on farmland near the Muncaster Estate and is a great place to stay for the Race the Tide weekend with great access to the castle gardens and the barn where the evening party is hosted. The site is for all ages from young groups of friends to families. Tents can be pitched from 12:00 onwards on Friday afternoon in the camping area which will be clearly marked. Please bring your own equipment. All tents are allowed but give us warning if it's abnormally huge.

Toilets, drinking water, and showers are available at the camping area. Only eco-friendly and biodegradable soaps are allowed on the camping site. No cars can be parked in the camping area, so be prepared to walk up to 10 minutes with your camping gear from the main car park. Open fires will not be allowed, but those raised above the ground and without leaving a mark are permitted. Our camping and overall Race the Tide is pet friendly therefore feline campers are strongly encouraged, but keep in mind that although we love dogs, not everyone does. Please keep your dog in close proximity.

CAMPERVANS

Whilst the main camping field is not accessible with campers, we do allow campervans in a nearby field with better access to the main road. Campervan pitches are off grid with no electric hookups available. The charge for this is the same as a camping ticket or is included in your weekend pass.

DIRECTIONS TO MUNCASTER CASTLE

For SatNav: use postcode CA18 1RD but beware of being brought over the mountain passes, particularly if starting from the Central Lakes. Muncaster is ~90 minutes from the M6 at either Kendal J36 or Penrith J40 or Carlisle J44.

By road from the North: From Carlisle, follow the A595 for Cockermouth, then Whitehaven and Barrow. Or from M6 Penrith follow the A66 towards Workington, then the A595 towards Whitehaven and then Barrow. This road bypasses Ravenglass and goes past Muncaster’s main entrance and car park. For the coach park, disabled and accommodation parking, continue ca 1/3 mile and take the next right.

By road from the South: Leave the M6 Motorway at junction 36. Follow the signs for Barrow-in-Furness on the A590. Before Barrow, turn right at Greenodd onto the A5092 and follow this road for Workington and Whitehaven. This joins the A595 which will bring you to Muncaster, ca 7 miles after Bootle village, over a stone bridge and up the hill. The first turn left is for the coach park, disabled and accommodation parking. For Muncaster’s main car park and entrance, continue ca 1/3 mile on the A595.

By public transport: Ravenglass railway station is ~1 mile away. You can walk to the castle from there ~20 minutes. There is likely to be a shuttle bus that also links up to Wasdale, though this has not yet been confirmed. Taxis are available locally by prior booking. Check with Traveline for public transport options on www.traveline.info
