EXPLORE MUNCASTER CASTLE

Nestled in the heart of the Lake District, Muncaster Castle is a hidden gem of history, beauty, and adventure. With a legacy spanning over 800 years, this stunning castle invites visitors to explore its state rooms, uncover fascinating stories from its rich history, and wander through vibrant gardens that stretch across the estate. Whether you're here for history, relaxation, or inspiration, Muncaster Castle offers something for everyone. You will also likely bump into a family member who are very much still involved in the day to day, especially during Race the Tide since it is a family favourite.
While the race happens on August 9, why not arrive on Friday August 8, anytime after 12:00 PM, to register and shake off those pre-race nerves by taking full advantage of your ticket? It includes access to the award-winning Muncaster Castle and Gardens attraction, giving you the chance to immerse yourself in the castle’s rich heritage and stunning surroundings before race da y begi ns! Here are a few of the highlights many of which are included in your ticket. For more information visit the Muncaster Castle website. Further afield there is of course Wastwater or Ennerdale both of which offer spectacular scenery often undiscovered by your usual lake district visitor. The heritage railway, ‘the ratty’, is also a short walk from the campsite and again offers a fun day-long activity for all ages. ​

WEAPONS HALL

Explore the brand-new Weapons Hall at Muncaster Castle! Enjoy thrilling activities like archery, axe throwing, jousting, and more. As a Race the Tider, it is a small upgrade onsite to partake in this purpose built internal arena!

BIRD SHOW

Everyday at 11:30 and 14:00 don’t forget to watch one of the Muncaster Hawk and Owl Centre displays set in the Muncaster’s beautiful gardens. This is your opportunity to witness the stealthy silent flight of an owl, the breathtaking speed of a falcon or a majestic eagle soar over the valley! It is a must!

CASTLE TOURS

​Step inside the magnificent Muncaster Castle and embark on a journey through centuries of history. Our guided tours offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the Pennington family and local community, who have called this castle home for over 800 years. Wander through beautifully preserved rooms, admire stunning architecture, and hear captivating tales of the castle’s varied past, from royal visits to legendary ghostly encounters. The castle interior is open from 12 to 4pm each day.

THE GARDENS

Explore 77 acres of beautiful historic gardens at Muncaster Castle, where cultivated areas blend with woodlands, lawns, and adventure playgrounds and trails. The collection is varied with flowering found every day of the year, making it very pleasant to discover the miles of trails. Sturdy footwear is advised, and our team is happy to guide you to paths suitable for wheelchairs, baby buggies, and mobility scooters.

FOOD, DRINKS, & BBQ

Your Race the Tide Weekender Runner, Weekender Supporter, and Weekender Child tickets covers supper on Saturday evening. For all other meals, food trucks, and the Muncaster café will be available for participants throughout the weekend. Food and drinks from there will be available to purchase at your own expenses. 

​BBQ’s and campfires are allowed as long as they are raised off the ground and suitable measures are taken to protect the grass. Feel free to bring additional snacks and booze for the camping area. There are limited options to buy from nearby, with the nearest outlet being a spar 5 mins drive at Holmrook. 

Your own alcohol is allowed on the campsite but not in the barn area where you can purchase it from the bar or around the castle. For all meals, vegetarian and vegan options will be provided. Please ensure you notify us and ask before you buy for any allergies you might have.

SATURDAY NIGHT DINNER & CEILIDH

On Saturday night join us for the traditional dinner and Ceilidh dance. Those are included with any weekender ticket or can be purchased as stand alone items in the buy your own experience section. Wear whatever you feel more comfortable with but avoid heels and heavy shoes. ​This really is a unique cultural experience that we can not recommend enough!

CARDS, CASH, SIGNAL, & POWER

While card machines will be available in all locations it is always good to bring cash just in case. The nearest ATM can be found in Holmrook Service station. The cafe, shop, and visitor centre at Muncaster all accept cards. 

​There are a couple of power sockets in the Barn but wifi and mobile signal is limited in the festival area so prepare yourself for Digital Detox.

WHAT TO PACK

Camping equipment: All the usuals - tent, roll mat, sleeping bag, torch are recommended - plus any other creature comforts you can't live without.
​

All-weather gear: Cumbrian weather is reliably changeable - come prepared to be simultaneously soaked and sunburnt with rain jacket, sunscreen and wellies as well as your running clothes, towels and some changes of clothes. It may be August but it's still chilly at night - make sure to bring some warm clothes for the evening.
